Broadleaf plantain treatments offered in Allentown, Bethlehem, and surrounding areas of Pennsylvania.
Plantain, or plantago, grows in cool-season grasses during the warmer months of summer.
Your lawn faces a lot of threats during the growing season and one of them is the broadleaf plantain, or plantago. This weed grows quickly in cool-season grasses during the warm months of summer unless it is properly treated.
We offer broadleaf plantain treatments to residential, commercial, and HOA properties in and around Allentown, Bethlehem, Emmaus, and nearby Pennsylvania communities.
How to Recognize Broadleaf Plantain
Not to be confused with plantain, the banana-like fruit, broadleaf plaintain is a common weed that targets yards throughout the Lehigh Valley. If you see broadleaf plantain growing in your yard, know that it can be one of the toughest weeds to eliminate.
The leaves all branch out from the center of the plant in a rosette-type structure. They are smooth and shaped like an oval or ellipsis. Like the dandelion, plantain also has a taproot that runs deep into the ground and once that taproot is established, it is not as easy to eliminate. There are white flowers that emerge from the plant as well.
Once you see flowers bloom, be careful because those hold the seed pods and can spread the weed growth even more throughout your yard.
When Broadleaf Plantain Grows & Its Ideal Conditions
You can expect to see broadleaf plantain pop up during the warmer months of spring and summer and even into the fall sometimes. It is a perennial plant, so it will grow every year without weed control treatments. You can catch it growing in places such as:
- Cracks between pavement
- Landscape beds
We often find this weed growing in damp, moist areas in either full sun or partial shade that also have compacted soil.
How We Eliminate Broadleaf Plantain from Your Yard
Since this weed is so strong, it requires both pre- and post-emergent weed control treatments in order to control it. Our lawn care company will administer applications in early spring, early summer, summer, early fall, and fall in order to make sure that the broadleaf plantain is gone from the lawn.
Since the weed thrives in compacted soil, we may also recommend aeration treatments, either liquid or core aeration. This will loosen up the soil and decrease the chances of plantain coming back into your lawn.
