The fall time is the perfect season to renovate the lawn. Green Turf is your local, trusted lawn care service company. Here are a few tips that we have learned over the years!
Renovating a lawn requires some effort but the lasting results will make you a proud homeowner. The key to getting the results you want is to follow the right cultivating steps. If your lawn is taken over by weeds and dead spots, it is time to give the lawn some tender love care!
Your first step is to find a nonselective herbicide to spray on the area you are working on. Glyphosate is the perfect product for the job. The treatment will move throughout all the plant parts and will not leave a residue in the soil. This will allow you to seed the soil after 10 days of spraying with Glyphosate! Be patient and let the herbicide work into the rhizomes. Every lawn is different, so if you have a terrible lawn you might need to do a second application. It is recommended that you wait another 10-50 days after re-spraying to seed.
Once the herbicide has done its work, bring your mower to the work area. Adjust the mower height to 1/2 “ and scalp the grass. The goal is to scalp the lawn and also to leave a small amount of dead grass to serve as a natural mulch protector.
Thirdly, use a power rake to thin the area and expose a good bit of the soil. The objective is to cut through the old lawn and into the dirt. When you apply your seed, you want the new seeds to make contact with the soil. A good tip for compacted soil is to use a core aerator to cultivate the ground even more.
Step 4 is the fun part! Apply the seed over the site that you want established. Depending on your area you will want to use 3-5lbs of seed per 1,000 sq. feet. Finalize the seeding by raking in the seed into the soil. A simple way to do this is by taking a garden rake or power rake and lightly move the surface area.
The last step to renovating is to fertilize and water. In order for you to see quick results, apply a new lawn starter fertilizer and keep the soil moist for the next 2 weeks.
